"It's been ten years now. I shouldn't be crying over this still, it's stupid."

These words were spoken to me by someone carrying the grief of loss years after the loss occurred. There seems to be this assumption that moving forward is a linear line – distancing yourself further and further from the event, assuming the distance will heal the hurt. This idea is held by many on what it means to move forward and grow after a divorce, loss, or other big life transition.

But moving forward isn't always linear. Rather, it's more of a spiral. Each time we circle back around, we are presented with that difficult time once again – either by an anniversary or other trigger. The memory will never disappear, and the pain will never fully fade. However, as we continue in our journey, we will eventually move further out of the spiral and farther away from the event.

It’s not a question of beating yourself up about “why am I not over this yet?” It's simply part of the spiral. You aren't stuck or fixated on the event, you've just circled back around to it. You're still growing and moving forward, as long as you don't stop on the spiral. This is simply another chapter in your book. There are still pages to be written.

Sometimes removing negativity from your life means removing negative people.

When you search helpful tips about removing negativity in your life, they are usually focused inward – recognizing negative thoughts and stopping them in their tracks, and learning to focus on positive thoughts.

But have you ever entered into a conversation with a friend or family member in a good mood, only to leave the conversation feeling down, empty, and alone? Sometimes, the negativity in our lives come from the people around us, and no amount of internal positivity can fight it.

Negativity influences our emotions, thoughts, and even physical health. Negative people can be just as harmful to our state of mind and sense of self.

One of the toughest lessons to learn is no matter how good our intentions are, we can't correct the negativity in others if they don't want to change. It's more likely that their negativity will end up affecting us. Sometimes, the best thing we can do to protect ourselves and our mental health is to walk away from those negative people.

If you can't completely walk away from those negative people, make sure to set very strong boundaries. Setting strong boundaries could potentially create positive change in the relationship, but the ultimate goal is to protect your own well-being.
